When faced with the challenge of redesigning a dated and ordinary parlor room of a large Lincoln Park home, the Rae Duncan Interior Design team chose to incorporate whimsey and color to make a playful and bright room, the perfect spot for social gatherings. The owner of the home wanted to include a massive, very colorful painting into the space, and the design was entirely inspired by that piece. We chose to adopt these four elements and features to fully exploit whimsey and color, as well as the space in this urban parlor room.
Jewel tones are deeply saturated hues, such as emerald green and ruby red, that add a bold statement to any room. In this project, we chose to use a sapphire blue velvet couch, to bring a splash of color into the room. The velvet added a soft texture to the room, complimenting the rich, saturated hue of the sofa. Additionally, we included intense plum purple ottomans, bringing an additional jewel tone into the room, albeit a much smaller burst of color. In this case, the jewel tones bring a regal and majestic touch to the room.
The creative and funky light fixtures in this room not only provide light for the room, but also supply industrial features and boost the exclusivity of the atmosphere. We chose a cluster of globe pendant lights with glass accents to hang from the ceiling. Along with these pendant lights, we also used novelty table lights with a metal base and an oil bronze finish, designed to accommodate lights for added function and style. These statement lights have an industrial flair that further complement the pendant lights and continue the round, circular style of lights within the room.
Selecting the right style of coffee table for any living room can draw together all of the elements, completing the ambiance of the room. With this in mind, we knew that we needed to choose a coffee table that would reflect the rest of the room’s features. The reflective, mirrored coffee table we chose for this project assimilated the modern elements of the room, as well as literally reflected light off of its surfaces. The geometric angles of the coffee table draw the eye, making it the quintessential centerpiece for the great room.
Adding custom built-in shelves to this urban parlor fully utilized the space, as well as brought structure to the room. The built-in shelves provided areas to display unique accessories and fun artifacts such as glass and ceramic vases, greenery, sculptures, books, book ends, and other decorative pieces. We also included space for a T.V. above the fireplace and for an extraordinary art piece. All of the built-in shelves feature shelf lighting, so that all of the artifacts, decorations, and artwork on display are fully illuminated.
Clad in jewel tones, this urban parlor’s redesign of a large Lincoln Park home soars to new heights. The design establishes an inviting and playful atmosphere, complete with funky and modern features—the room is anything but ordinary. This urban parlor room creates the whimsical and fun space the owner had hoped to design.
